While iPhone users chat with a Siri powered by Google's Gemini, Apple's own product teams are building the future with a different AI entirely. According to reporting by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Anthropic's Claude models have become a fundamental tool within Apple, deeply integrated into internal operations for coding, documentation, and product development.

This split highlights a pragmatic, two-track strategy. Publicly, Apple partnered with Google for Siri, a move driven by scale and likely favorable economics for a feature on over two billion devices. Internally, however, engineers across the company organically adopted Claude for its utility in core technical work. The arrangement shows that even a titan like Apple must currently rely on external AI partners to compete.

The internal reliance on Anthropic is particularly telling given Apple's famed culture of secrecy. It indicates a high level of trust, presumably backed by strict data agreements to protect proprietary information. This trust nearly extended to consumers. AppleInsider reports that Apple seriously considered rebuilding Siri on Claude's technology, but talks fell apart over Anthropic's price, which Apple viewed as too steep for a global rollout.

That failed consumer deal underscores the current AI market dynamics. Startups like Anthropic, backed by giants like Google and Amazon, are balancing validation against maintaining pricing power and strategic independence. For now, Apple gets its AI horsepower where it fits best: Claude for building products behind the curtain, and Google for answering user questions in the spotlight.
