Claude's User Base Triples, Posing a Direct Threat to ChatGPT's Dominance

Anthropic’s Claude chatbot is experiencing a dramatic rise in popularity. According to a report from The Information, daily user signups have tripled since November, signaling a major shift for the AI startup long seen as a technical, but not yet popular, rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The surge coincides with the release of Claude 3.5 Sonnet last November. The updated model received strong praise, particularly for its coding prowess and reasoning, suggesting positive reviews are finally driving mainstream adoption. Founded in 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, who left OpenAI over safety concerns, Anthropic built its reputation on a "Constitutional AI" approach and a strong enterprise business. Yet, its consumer-facing chatbot lagged far behind ChatGPT’s meteoric growth.

That gap is now narrowing. Analysts point to Claude’s superior performance on tasks like long-document analysis and its massive context window, which appeals to professionals. The company has also sharpened its consumer product, adding features like "Artifacts" for generating content within chats and "Projects" for organizing complex work.

This growth comes with formidable financial backing. A recent $2 billion funding round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, brought Anthropic’s valuation to over $60 billion. With Amazon and Google as major investors, the company has both capital and critical cloud infrastructure.

The momentum places new pressure on OpenAI. While ChatGPT remains the clear market leader, Anthropic’s rise proves the field is no longer a solo act. Unlike OpenAI, which has faced public controversy over its governance shift, Anthropic has cultivated a lower-profile, safety-focused image that resonates with a segment of users and corporate clients.

The immediate challenge for Anthropic is turning this influx of new users into lasting engagement and revenue. With the anticipated release of Claude 4 this year and a push into more autonomous "agentic" AI, the company has moved from being a respected lab to a full-spectrum contender in the race for AI users.
