Google Labs Acquires ProducerAI, Bringing AI Music Creation to the Masses

Google announced Tuesday that ProducerAI, a generative music tool, is joining its experimental Google Labs division. The platform, which counts The Chainsmokers among its backers, lets users type simple requests—such as “make a lofi beat”—to generate original music. It’s powered by Google DeepMind’s latest Lyria 3 model, which can transform text and images into audio.

While Lyria 3’s capabilities were recently added to the Gemini app, Google positions ProducerAI as a more intuitive creative partner. “ProducerAI has allowed me to create in new ways,” wrote Elias Roman, Senior Director of Product Management at Google Labs, citing experiments with genre blends and personalized songs.

The announcement featured Grammy-winning artist Wyclef Jean, who used Lyria 3 and Google’s Music AI Sandbox on his recent track. He described the process as a careful curation, not just button-clicking. In a company video, Jean emphasized the human element: “You’re in the era where the human has to be the most creative… There’s one thing that you have over the AI: a soul.”

The move arrives amid fierce debate over AI’s role in music. Hundreds of artists, including Billie Eilish and Jon Bon Jovi, signed a 2024 letter protesting AI tools they fear will undermine creativity, while major lawsuits over training data continue. Yet other artists see utility; Paul McCartney used AI audio cleanup to finish a John Lennon demo, resulting in a 2025 Grammy. Meanwhile, AI-generated songs from platforms like Suno have climbed charts and landed users record deals.

As the legal questions persist, Google is betting tools like ProducerAI will find their place not as replacements, but as new instruments in the creative toolkit.
