Roblox's New AI Chat Feature Rewrites Messages in Real Time

Roblox is rolling out a new AI feature today that actively rewrites player chat messages as they are sent. Moving beyond the platform's traditional method of simply blocking offensive words with symbols, this system attempts to reinterpret messages containing flagged language into what it deems more appropriate terms. The company states the goal is to preserve the original intent of a message while making it more respectful. For example, a message like "Hurry TF up!" would be automatically changed to "Hurry up!" for all recipients. When a message is altered, a notice appears in the chat informing everyone that a rephrase has occurred to maintain civility. This approach differs from systems like Minecraft's, which typically just replace words with symbols or block the message entirely. Currently, the real-time rephrasing tool is limited to "in-experience" chats between players who have completed Roblox's age verification process and are placed in comparable age groups. Last month, Roblox made age verification mandatory for accessing its chat functions, allowing communication primarily within similar age brackets, such as between users aged 9-12 and those 13-15.
