Russian Lawmaker Warns Against Using AI Chatbots as Doctors

MOSCOW, Feb 22 – A senior Russian health official has issued a stark warning against using artificial intelligence for self-diagnosis and treatment, calling the practice a direct threat to public safety. Yulia Drozhzhina, a member of the State Duma’s health committee, pointed to documented cases where such actions led to fatal outcomes.

"We are seeing a troubling pattern," Drozhzhina told RIA Novosti. "People are increasingly turning to neural networks for medical advice, even to diagnose themselves. These systems are not doctors. There have been incidents where individuals mixed medications incorrectly or delayed seeing a professional based on algorithmic suggestions, with tragic results."

The parliamentarian stressed that AI has a legitimate, supportive role in healthcare. It can help patients prepare questions for an appointment or suggest which type of specialist to consult. However, she drew a firm line at clinical decisions.

"The final word on treatment, prescriptions, and procedures must always come from a licensed medical professional," Drozhzhina stated. "When it comes to health, the cost of a mistake is measured in lives. That is not a risk anyone should take with a machine." Her comments highlight a growing global concern as AI tools become more accessible, urging the public to view them as a supplement to, not a replacement for, human expertise.
