The batteries are destined for xAI's sprawling Colossus data center complex in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility, packed with hundreds of thousands of high-performance computer chips, requires a staggering amount of electricity. Tesla's Megapacks act as a massive backup system, storing energy to prevent outages and manage surges, allowing operations to continue smoothly. According to local reports and industry tracking, xAI received shipments of these container-sized batteries throughout 2025 to support its expansion.
This move also came after local controversy. xAI initially installed dozens of natural gas turbines at the Memphis site, drawing complaints about emissions. By mid-2025, the company had connected to a new electrical substation and brought the Megapacks online, significantly reducing its use of the turbines in response to community and regulatory pressure.
For Tesla, the energy division was a bright spot in a challenging year. While the company's core automotive revenue fell 10% in 2025, its energy business grew 27% to $12.8 billion, partly buoyed by deals like the one with xAI. The battery segment is now seen as a vital and growing pillar for Tesla, especially as global demand for data center power skyrockets.
Further entwining the companies, Tesla invested $2 billion in xAI in early 2026. The deal proceeded despite some shareholder objections, and xAI's Grok AI software is already being used in Tesla vehicles.
