The $190,000 Flying Machine in Your Garage: Pivotal's BlackFly Hits the Market
Forget traffic. The first personal flying vehicle you can actually buy is now being delivered to customers. Pivotal, a California aerospace company, has started handing over keys to its BlackFly, a single-seat electric aircraft that takes off and lands vertically. With a sticker price of $190,000, it’s a luxury purchase, but one that sidesteps the need for a pilot’s license, cleared by the FAA as an ultralight.
The BlackFly is designed for short hops, not cross-country trips. It can fly about 25 miles on a charge at speeds up to 63 mph, aiming to turn a suburban driveway into a launchpad. It’s small enough to fit in a standard garage. The craft’s eight electric motors allow it to lift straight up and its amphibious hull lets it settle on water. Safety systems include a full-aircraft parachute.
This launch, happening now in 2026, follows years of testing and a regulatory sprint. By meeting the strict sub-254-pound limit for ultralights, Pivotal avoided the years-long certification process facing larger air taxis. Buyers get about 90 minutes of training at the company’s facility before flying home.
While the price is steep, it undercuts traditional small aircraft ownership. The market is watching to see if early adopters—likely wealthy commuters—embrace the reality of back-yard flight. For now, the era of personal flight isn't coming; for a few, it has already arrived.
