Washington State Considers Opening the Door for Direct EV Sales
A long-standing rule in the car business—that manufacturers can’t sell directly to customers—may be about to change in Washington. State lawmakers are advancing a bill that would let electric vehicle companies like Rivian and Lucid bypass traditional dealerships and sell straight to the public. This move would place Washington among a small but growing group of states rethinking laws that have protected local car dealers for generations.
The proposed legislation specifically carves out an exception for EV makers that never built a network of franchised dealers. For companies like Rivian and Lucid, which designed their sales to be online and direct, this is the opening they’ve needed. They argue the old system, created decades ago to balance power between Detroit giants and local sellers, doesn’t fit how electric cars are marketed and serviced today.
Unsurprisingly, the Washington State Auto Dealers Association opposes the change. The group maintains that dealerships guarantee price competition, local service, and consumer protection that factory-owned stores cannot match. Their lobbying power has successfully defended the franchise model in many state capitals for years.
But the political ground in Washington may be shifting. The state is a national leader in EV adoption, and Governor Bob Ferguson has backed policies to speed the transition to electric transport. There’s also precedent: Tesla has operated its own stores in the state under a patchwork of agreements. This bill would create a clearer, permanent path for other EV-only brands.
For Rivian and Lucid, the financial stakes are significant. Both companies are under pressure to streamline costs and control the customer experience as they compete with established automakers. The ability to sell directly, without a middleman, is central to their business plans.
The outcome in Olympia is being watched closely. If passed, Washington’s law would signal a continued erosion of the dealership monopoly, reflecting both changing consumer preferences and the new realities of the electric vehicle industry.
